Stress & Sleep
About Stress & Sleep
Stress and sleep are becoming larger issues in our current world, due to the rise in
technology, busy lives and less time to switch off. Stress often impacts on sleep
quality and duration. Stress and a lack of sleep can both have a severe impact on
physical and mental health.
Prolonged stress increases the metabolic needs of the body and causes many other
changes. The increased metabolism can also cause an increase in the use and
excretion of many nutrients.
Sleep is a basic physiological function and one of the essential factors that affects
immunity, thermoregulation, homeostasis maintenance and recovery. Stress levels
and food intake have significant associations with objective sleep quality. Nutrition and stress management for insomnia should be considered for improving not only quantity but also quality of sleep.
